What to expect. How to explain OT to your child. And how we support you, too.

If you’re here, you’re likely wondering if your child could benefit from occupational therapy—and what that might look like. We’re so glad you found us. You don’t need to know anything about OT to start. At COAST SF, we walk with you every step of the way, offering clear guidance, playful connection, and ethical, individualized care.

What is OT, in Parent-Friendly Terms?

Occupational therapy helps children build the skills they need to participate in everyday life—playing, learning, socializing, and growing with confidence.

We help with:

  • Motor coordination
  • Sensory processing
  • Emotional regulation
  • Executive functioning
  • Social interactions
  • Feeding and picky eating
  • Building independence in daily routines

Our therapy is play-based, evidence-informed, and focused on what matters most to you and your child.

We believe parent involvement is key to your child’s success.

What to Expect From the First Evaluation

No guesswork. Just understanding and a plan.

Every child starts with a comprehensive evaluation. We use a combination of play-based observation, standardized tools, and real-life tasks to understand how your child moves, thinks, relates, and responds. We’ll then meet with you to share insights, answer your questions, and create a therapy plan that makes sense for your family.

Every evaluation includes a parent meeting. You feel supported, informed, and empowered.

How to Talk to Your Child About OT

Use simple, age-appropriate language that helps your child feel comfortable and curious. Here are a few examples:

“OT helps you get better at doing things like playing, learning, and taking care of yourself.”

“Some kids, just like you, have a harder time with certain things—like sitting still, holding a pencil, or making new friends. OT helps make those things easier.”

“Our OT is like a special teacher who helps kids become even more amazing at all the things they love doing.”

Keep it positive, brief, and rooted in everyday life. We’re happy to help you tailor the conversation for your child’s age and personality.

You’re not on the sidelines—you’re central to the process.
